Your Kid’s Ability to Start a Home Business

Over the years, my girls (now 11 and 7) have asked me to help them start their own business. They have had several ideas come and go…an online horse game business; a political magazine and a fashion magazine; pet related products; girl related hard-copy magazines; a horse stable downtown; they wanted to manufacture their own toys and create their own video games; and oh, yes- the homemade treats they wanted to bake, package and sell themselves.

I have always told them that I loved their ideas and that we should “check it out” or that they should put it down on paper to revisit when we are not as broke, have more time, resources, etc. I always felt I lacked the knowledge and resources to help create businesses for kids and turn their ideas into a reality.

Then one afternoon, I stumbled upon a YouTube video of a show host interviewing a nine year old who had decided to go into business for herself so that someday, she could buy a horse of her own. I felt horrified over how much I had underestimated the abilities of my own children! However, I was excited to learn that there already are businesses for kids out there that have been wildly successful. Helping kids start a business is not such a crazy idea after all.

To make sure, I did some further research and learned that this 9-year-old girl is far from alone. So many successful kids have founded their own businesses that I will not even try to count. I read about Jason O’Neill, creator and founder of Pencil Bugs; Cameron Johnson, who started his first official business at 9 years old; Anshul Samar, who began to build his business, Alchemist Empire during his 4th grade summer; and Adam Hildreth who started his first business, Dubit, in 1999 at the age of fourteen.

In addition, more than just a couple of kids who have taken business on early in life have been wildly successful. So successful that some are actually multimillionaires now!

I thought back to all the home-business courses and books I have read over the years…How could I be so thoughtless? Starting a business for kids would involve the same basic steps one needs to take in starting your own home business for grown-ups. A kid or a teenager can just as easily get started in a niche of his or her own.

Only better…Kids and teens are a wellspring of imaginative thoughts and ideas, and are unafraid to take action. Moreover, by starting out at a young age, they have more time to build, learn from mistakes, and build again.

Chances are, your kid has already shown you his or her entrepreneur spirit, but even if they have not, you can easily ignite that flame. Maybe, like me, they just need to be shown that it has been done by other kids and it can be done by them too.

Why a Pet Trainer is Great Idea

I was raised around dogs—Dobermans, to be a bit more precise. My father was very good at training the first one. The second one was younger, and he was mine—I trained him mostly. We spent a lot of time together, although the older dog helped train the younger. I worked with two dog trainers who worked with specific breeds when I was younger as well. I learned some great techniques and tricks. Then, I got older. I got my own place. I had kids and they wanted a dog. Truth be told, so did I. Nonetheless, I got a dog. Somehow, not even sure exactly how, a second dog soon followed. All of a sudden, I was running into problems I had never had with the dogs I worked with earlier in my life. They were making a mess on the floor. They were chewing on things. They were jumping. They just weren’t listening.

Desperate, I went to a dog trainer. The books, articles, and magazines my wife and I had invested in really proved worthless to us. Even after only one or two sessions with the trainer, I noticed an immediate change with my dogs. The trainer kept me there for the training, so he could explain everything to me. Each of the dogs, it turns out, requires different techniques to train. They have their own personality and they are different breeds which have their own unique quirks. I knew dogs had personality, but I never knew it was like this. I would think “no” with the right tone and body language would have the same effect across all dogs and breeds. The pet trainer was a great idea. My dogs are model family pets now…mostly. Without the trainer I honestly don’t know how long I could have kept these additions to my family. And, that is what they are. They are members of my family. But, they were costing me too much money with their destructive behaviors and cleaning up after them constantly took a severe amount of time. Without a pet trainer, I would have been in a terrible spot. What is worse is I had learned how to train dogs—just not these dogs.

It took a real trainer to show me how to train them. One of the things that amazes me most about our four-legged friends is how happy they are since they have undergone the training. They do not like getting yelled at any more than anyone else. They actually like to make us happy, and do not even need a thanks or a pat on the head. They can sense the emotion and revel in it.

Other pet dogs are not the typical “toy” dogs but also adapt very well to the family lifestyle in house.
A very popular and charming dog breed perfect for your home is the Maltese. they have soft white fur and do not become very large. Heir tender and playful character will win you from the first day.
If you are looking for a slightly bigger dog breed that is also suitable for small home, consider the English Cocker Spaniel. Black, golden or red, these dogs are one of the best friends ever. They are very smart, lovely and playful. Moreover this is a very easy going dog and easily goes into contact with people or other dogs.
If you want to get a real “jewel” type of dog look for a toy dog breed. The Chihuahua is among the most popular pet dogs of this type. Its maximum height is 9 inches and doesn’t require almost any exercising. However it needs a lot of grooming. A small disadvantage of the Chihuahua is that they don’t go very well with other dogs. To compensate this they are very devoted and fiercely loyal.

Advertising That Will Work When You Start a Pet Sitting Business

I have been a pet sitter for nearly 20 years. During that time, I have used many different forms of advertising for different reasons. In my opinion, the best form of advertising for your pet sitting business startup is useful advertising.

One of my favorites are the high quality magnetic business cards – I don’t mean the type where you stick a printed business card to cheap magnet stock which looks bad right after you make them and absolutely horrid a few weeks later on someone’s refrigerator. So of course it goes in the trash and your dog walking business is immediately out of sight and mind. Get online and shop! You can buy really decent all-vinyl magnetic cards that will stay shiny and new for years for about 23 cents each. Know anyplace else you can buy years of in-your-face customer advertising for your pet sitting business at 23¢ a pop? Me neither! And they can use your business cards to hang up kid’s drawings on the fridge.

My all time favorites are laminated place mats for food dishes and water bowls. With my pet sitting business startup, I used to have 11 X 17 inch paper place mats printed; they were very cute with a dog or cat in the sitting position with crown, a cape and a caption that said “My Pet sitter Treated Me Royally while You Were Away.” Right below this was the logo and phone number of my pet sitting business. Customers loved these and my pet sitting startup got more business.

Unfortunately, the mats were paper, so they got messy pretty quickly and then thrown away (again, out of sight, out of mind). I decided to look into having them laminated, which of course would extend their lifespan for years and keep my pet sitting business name in front of customers every time they gave their pet’s food or water. Unfortunately the cost was prohibitive to have someone else do this and when I decided to start a pet sitting business, I certainly wasn’t rolling in the dough (18 years ago it was 1.89 each – today, it’s relatively cheap to buy a 50 pack of self-laminating sheets at any office supply store).

Never let a great idea go away without a complete investigation. I went looking for a laminating machine and supplies. After some searching I bought a machine that would accommodate 11 X 17 for 169.00 and I still use the same machine today. Supplies are readily available online at good prices, and this is a dead easy item to make. My only other suggestion is to place two of them back to back and laminate them as one. That way, no matter which side is used, the customer will see your dog walking business and the mat has a quality thicker feel to it.

You will not believe how these simple ideas will help boost your pet sitting business; useful advertising can be extremely low cost yet provide your pet sitting startup with tremendous long-term benefits.
