How Can My Pet Cat Have Re-appeared 15 Miles Away?

We’ve recently lost our pet cat, a 1 year old female. She uncharacteristically vanished a couple of months ago and, to be honest, we’d presumed she was dead. Out of the blue today we get a phone call from a vet saying she was alive – someone had took her in to get spayed not realised she had been already, and the microchip revealed our name and address.
Apparently she had been living with some old lady about 15 miles away. Could someone explain to me how the FOOK this could happen?

Unfortunately people “find” cats all the time….think they are lost & take them in. The correct thing to do would have been to take the cat to a vet to be scanned for a microchip (which yours has) & then she could have been returned to you but some folks just take cats in without regard to the rightful owner.
One of my cats sometimes roams a good distance from our house but I don’t think he’s ever gone 15 miles away…that’s a good distance.
Even if your cat had had a collar with a tag on it this lady would have probably still taken her & kept her.
I can understand why you are upset about this as I would be in the same circumstances….there are a lot of people out there who have a thing about gathering as many cats around them as possible – hoarders I think they are called.
Thankfully both my cats have been staying closer to home recently & just lazing in our back garden….hope yours doesn’t wander off again. xx
