Is Somebody Stealing My Pet Birds?
I had twenty zebra finches in one big cage in my back garden. Suddenly there are only 7 or nine left. There is no dead bodies, but there is no physical proof someone has snuck into my yard and stolen them. My room leads right outside to the backyard and I hear thudding noises and noises that rat or any animal cannot make.
Are there any other ways my sweet pet birds are gone? The cage is secure so nothing can get in or out.
I sure do hate that this is happening to you. It looks like people are giving you some useful suggestions.
I really liked the bell idea. Maybe you could put several bells in there and your finches would knock them around when they are disturbed. It would also be a great deter rant for whatever is getting into your cage – if the birds are not just getting out on their on.
If you can get a camera, that would be great. If you do not have one, maybe you could borrow or rent one. You might ask for one on the Yahoo Group, FreeCycle. What about a baby monitor. If you put bells in the cage and a baby monitor near the cage, you might hear them better.
I know that rats and snakes can get into very tiny holes (often very unbelievably small). You might not hear either of them.
Thankfully, you have not found any dead bodies. That would be very sad.
Lastly, you might make some flyers regarding your lost birds and pass them out around the neighborhood. If you offer a small reward, it would give some people the incentive to turn in anyone they might know who stole your birds.
I hope you get all of your finches back.
