How to Train My Westie Not to Bark
My Westie, Emma, is a great and loving companion dog. I acquired her through a local puppy shop about 5 years ago and she has grown to be an integral part of the family. As much as I love her, I had to learn how to train my westie not to bark. Westie’s are not a constant barking dog, but they are protective of their territory and will always bark to announce a visitor or react to a threatening sound. So what exactly does my Westie’s bark mean?
I learned that the older female Westie is most likely to bark at a stranger. The bark sounds threatening, but she is quick to succumb to any attention. The male doesn’t even bark. He will just go for the friendship.
The most important approach is to never let the dog keep on barking. Bring him or her into the house, and even put them into the crate until he or she quiets. Allowing the dog to continue to bark is just like thanking or rewarding her for this annoying bevavior. Remember dogs need to be trained, not taught. Do not try to punish the animal for bad behavior, train them to know it is not acceptable. Caging or isolating the dog is not punishment, but merely a stimulus to change their bevavior.
So it is possible to train your Westie not to bark. Give it all your love and patience and enjoy her for her short life.
