Staging a Home with Pets: Getting Rid of Fleas

Staging your home can sometimes be a lot of work but one of the worst issues encountered when you’re planning to sell your house when you have pets, particularly cats and dogs is when they bring fleas to live in your house. The first thing that you should do is to help prevent your pet from being appealing to fleas in the first place. Even if you already have fleas in your home, this will help them from finding your pet so tasty and as a result, miserable. If you’re concerned about giving your pets chemicals, feed them a clove of garlic a day or a brewers yeast tablet once a day to make the fleas not attracted to them. These both will make your pets’ skin smell bad to fleas and keep them away from them. If you’re alright with drug-type remedies, then ask your vet about using Advantage or other such products. To get rid of fleas in your home there are a number of things that you can do. Sprinkle borax on your carpets and then vacuum it up to help kill fleas. Mop up uncarpeted areas with hot soapy water. Put any textiles that you can into the washing machine on hot. Take care to take your vacuum cleaner bag outside right away when you’re done as well. Do this regularly to keep the fleas out. The more extreme method of flea extermination is using a professional. You can hire an exterminator to use a flea fogger in your house but that is a lot of chemical residue to leave in your living space. It is recommended that foggers only be used in extreme cases for that reason. To get rid of fleas on your pet once they’ve already got them take the time to give them a bath, though they might not be happy about it. Use a pet-friendly soap which won’t irritate their skin. You may be able to find a teatree oil soap to use on them which will keep the fleas away with its distinctive smell. A few cups of fresh rosemary steeped in hot water, like tea, for a half hour or so makes a good rinse as fleas apparently hate the smell of that too. Remember that the last thing that anyone wants to have to deal with in a new home purchase is a pre-existing condition like a flea infestation so be sure to be thorough when you take care of it. Also, the quicker that you can solve the problem, the less of a job that it’ll be.

Showing Your Home with Pets

Though most everyone in America owns at least one pet, they can still cause a bit of a kerfuffle when it comes to selling your home. It turns out that even though we all love our own pets; we don’t all love everyone else’s choice in pets. Shocking, I know, but apparently some people would be distracted by my boa eyeing them up as they perused my house. There are a few reasons why prospective buyers aren’t thrilled to see pets or evidence of pets in a home that they’re looking to buy. First of all, pets stink. I know, I know, you wash your cat/dog/armadillo every day and therefore it doesn’t smell. Trust me, it smells. You don’t smell the odour of your pet because you live with it. When you live with an odour every day, you become desensitized to it and can no longer smell it the way that someone who’s new to your house will be able to. If you’ve ever gotten into an elevator with a woman wearing too much perfume, then you know how scent desensitization works and how horrible it can be to people who aren’t used to the smell.Another reason that people do not want to see your pet when they come to look at your house is that many people are allergic to animals. Even if you’ve taken the time to vacuum and have your carpets cleaned, if your fur-bearing animals are still living in your house, there’s pet hair and dander in residence as well. Did the breeder tell you that your poodle was hypoallergenic? Well, that’s not exactly true. Some breeds of dog shed less than others, or not at all, but they still produce proteins in their dander and saliva that cause allergic reactions. There are many people who don’t have any physical problem with animals who will not want to see them at a showing purely out of fear. Many people are very cautious around unknown dogs, which is a very wise reaction to have because you are a stranger in that dog’s territory and you could be making it feel threatened. People who are scared of cats are far less common but still worth noting. Terrariums with snakes, tarantulas, lizards, or other “creepy crawlies” will definitely need to be moved out of your house for showing. It’s estimated that up to half of all women have a fear of spiders and one quarter of people, regardless of gender, have a fear of snakes. Do yourself a favour and send these pets on vacation or you can be assured that some prospective buyers won’t be sticking around to check out how fabulous the rest of your house is. Remember that the trick to selling your house is to encourage people to see themselves living in your space. Seeing your pets and their toys during a showing will at best make it harder to see themselves as owners of the home and at worst scare them into leaving a showing. Don’t take any chances at wasting a showing over something that’s so simple to plan for. Remove your pets and all their accessories from the house; the faster you can get your house sold, the quicker you can get them comfortably into a new home.
