OY… some of the answers on here…
You can’t generalize over a specific breed of dog, but more on the individual nature/demeanor of individual dogs. You could have one rottie that is wonderful with your bird and another who will eat it without thinking twice. In fact, certain breeds should never be considered around a bird for obvious reasons… such as labs, retrievers, etc.
The best answer here is one of two things…
ONE. If you HAVE to get a dog… find one that you can adopt, from someone who knows a little about him already. Arrange to make visits with the dog and bring your bird (what kind of bird are we talking about?) and very carefully supervise the visit. See how each reacts to the other. If either shows ANY apprehension or fear, don’t move forward with the adoption. Even if the dog seems fine and the bird freaks out… consider what’s best for your bird… he comes first. Don’t just assume all is well if things go well on the first visit. If possible, have the dog make a couple of visits to your home, in your birds environment and see how that goes.
or TWO… just don’t take a chance by getting a dog regardless. Both dogs and cats have bacteria in their saliva that is deadly to birds and even a drop on the skin of the bird can make him sick or kill him.
    Good luck!

My two pit bulls get along well with my cockatoo. As a matter of fact, they are afraid of the feathered beast!
This is not to say that all pit bulls are friendly with birds. If you are thinking of adopting a new dog, your best bet would be to get a puppy. This way the puppy can be taught to leave the bird alone. I would stay clear of the small terriers though, many of them have a high prey drive and will chase anything smaller than them, or even larger! But I do believe most dogs will do just fine if introduced at an early age.

I had a golden retriever growing up and I also had a pet bird, a cockatiel, and they were best buddies!!! My bird would walk around the house and climb onto the dog, and she would just walk around with the bird on her back and didnt mind at all! They loved each other! So im not sure if my dog was just extra gentle and sweet or maybe all golden retrievers are tollerant of birds…im not sure.
What kinda bird(s) do you have?

Depends on the dog, and how it is/was raised. My chihuahua loves ducks and chicks. He gives them kisses and protects them from other dogs. Is too cute! My Mom’s chihuahua, not so lovey! My husbands dachsund is positive they’d make a good treat, if we’d just let her taste them!
Look for a dog that was bred for companionship, not for hunting, or fighting, or pest control. As instinct is instinct, and it’s pretty much still there.

My dog was, but I don’t think there’s any way of telling. It depends on the individual dog.

Its not so much a breed thing, but a temperament.
You could find a little tiny 2 lb dog that attacks and kills birds but a hunting dog or aussie dog that wont do anything. You need to get the puppy as a puppy and show them the bird.. introduce them before you plan on getting the dog full time (nothing is worse then taking a dog and then having to find another home for it) if they seem ok with it, then basically its a training point from there on out. You need to make sure yout rain the dog that the bird is OFF LIMITS.

One of my friend has 2 Yorkies, 1 Shi Shu, and 1 pet bird. She says, the bird thinks itself a dog, because it running with the dogs, eat with the dogs, even bark with the dogs.

My 2 beagles and 2 chihuahua get along perfectly fine with my cockatiel and parakeet. They all sit on the coach other and hang out. But I’m always there to watch … just incase …

I have a Gollie( Golden Retriever and Collie ), an Orange Wing Amazon Parrot and A bunny. My Gollie is great friends with the bunny and pays little mind to the bird, except to check on him from time to time! I believe that if you are getting a puppy, they adjust to their surroundings very well. As for an older rescue dog, do some research as to their temperament around other animals as well as humans! Hope this helps!

I’m pretty sure there’s not any breed of dog that’s known for getting along with birds. I have an Old English Bulldogge and I also have a cockatiel. I think it depends on how you socialize them. I would imagine that it would be best if your dog was a puppy when you introduced him to your bird. Honestly though I wouldn’t ever put a bird and a dog together. A bird is so small and fragile that even the nicest kindest dog eventually is going to accidentally step on him or playfully bite him and then it’s all over for your bird. Just in the paper today in Chicago a dachsund, the hot dog dogs, ate the genitals off a 3 year old boy when he was sleeping. I think the reason was that the kid had on a dirty diaper but I think that goes to show that even the most gentle, smallest, dogs can still be dangerous sometimes. Don’t try to make your dog and your bird friends, you’ll wind up with a dead bird.

I had a male Golden Retriever who was excellant with my parakeet. I only found out years later that dog salivia is bad for birds and they should not be around each other.
My bird used to fly to the bed and stand there while the golden retriever would give it a bath by licking it all over. It was the funniest thing. Also if the dog was eating a bone the bird would fly over and chew on the other side.
