Unsold ferrets are returned to the ranch farm they came from and are usually destroyed.
Kittens and puppies, either destroyed or turned to the animal shelter and often times destroyed (adoption rate is 40% at the shelters).

okay - to be fair there is a LOT of misconception (wrong info) about what happens...
this is a link that addresses the TRUTH of what happens to the PUPShttp://www.gomestic.com/Pets/What-Happen…
most of the other animals are bounced around from store to store until they sell -especially if its a chain store..
some animals like birds can be in a store for YEARS until they sell..
read the link its good info - factual and logicall.

I honestly know of one store in my entire state that sells dogs. The dogs they do sell are puppies from unwanted litters, not the result of a puppy mill.
Pet stores like Petsmart does not sell dogs and cats, but does host for an adoption agency. Every Sunday my local Petsmart brings dogs and cats to the store in an attempt to get them adopted.
~Because my store does not sell dogs or cats, I cannot say what happens when they are not sold. But in the event that an animal does stay in the store for a long time, the price is usually discounted to try to encourage people to buy him/her. If that fails the animal is either adopted out to an interested customer, or an associate.
