Why Don’t We Have Legal Protection For More Of Our House Pets?

I don’t know all of the laws right now in the US concerning this, but I can’t understand why it’s illegal to sell or serve dog or cat in the US, but other animals, such as rabbits (which I am the proud owner of two house rabbits) have little or no protection. It disgusts me and I refuse to go to a restaurant that serves rabbit or buy from any company that uses them for food or for fur (or lucky charms for that matter). Why can’t we develop legislation for the protection of the most popular domesticated house pets. My rabbits (which I was reluctant to get at first) are more affectionate and have more of a personality than most dogs or cats I’ve had or seen. It just doesn’t seem right. We need to protect all domesticated American house pets. You would never hear of a dog slaughterhouse in the US, but there still remain rabbit slaughterhouses. It’s time to end it.

Rabbits were a food animals long before they entered the pet market. The Romans introduced the rabbit to Britain as a food animal and they used to breed edible dormice for the table. In South America the guinea pig is a delicacy eaten deep fried.
To use your way of thinking if an animal is kept as a pet anywhere it is wrong to eat any of the same species.
Therefore we can’t eat beef, chicken, ducks or lamb because these animals can be kept as pets.

I agree with the prior posters. If every animal that was treated as a pet was not allowed for food there would be a lot more vegetarians. People own pigs as pets and I’ve heard they make great pets and are pretty clean but does that mean they should not be eaten? It’s all in the culture. We eat cows and the Buddhists consider them sacred “You should not eat that which gives you milk.”

You’re joking, right? You seriously want more regulation that reaches into you home. Your rabbits are safe, isn’t that enough. Its great that you have taken a stand about where you will eat based on your beliefs. However, don’t force your beliefs on me by legislating what I’m allowed to eat. I love rabbit pie.
